Helena, Montana – Governor Greg Gianforte has recognized two Montana Department of Transportation officers for their bravery and quick action that helped save lives during a dangerous winter incident earlier this year. Corporal Emily Verbanac and Corporal Megan Vinyard, both members of MDT’s Motor Carrier Services Division, received the governor’s Outstanding Service Award for their heroic response to a crash in Mineral County.
The award highlights the actions the two officers took on January 23, 2026, when they responded to a serious emergency along Interstate 90 during harsh winter conditions. Officials say their decisive actions helped prevent what could have become a tragic situation.
“When Corporal Verbanac and Corporal Vinyard arrived at the scene and found two unconscious passengers in a snowbound vehicle, they did not hesitate,” Gov. Gianforte said. “Their quick thinking, training, and decisive action in extreme winter conditions saved two lives.”
Emergency Response on Interstate 90
The incident began while Verbanac and Vinyard were on duty at the Haugan Weigh Station. At that time, they received notification of a single-vehicle crash involving injuries along Interstate 90 in Mineral County.

Because a patrol vehicle was not available, the two officers made a quick decision to respond using a personal vehicle in order to reach the scene as quickly as possible.
When they arrived at the crash site, deputies from the Mineral County Sheriff’s Office were already there working to assess the situation. The officers discovered a vehicle lodged in a snowbank, with its engine still running and the driver’s foot pressed on the accelerator.
Inside the vehicle were two occupants who were completely unresponsive.
Working alongside sheriff’s deputies, the officers helped gain access to the vehicle and remove the passengers. Once the individuals were safely outside the vehicle, Verbanac and Vinyard immediately began providing emergency medical assistance.
Officials said the officers used lifesaving tools and techniques during those critical moments. They deployed a defibrillator and administered Narcan, a medication used to reverse opioid overdoses. Their quick and coordinated efforts helped stabilize the individuals until further medical care could be provided.

Authorities say the training and readiness of the two officers made a critical difference that day, ultimately saving both occupants’ lives.
Honored for Exceptional Public Service
To recognize their extraordinary actions, Governor Gianforte presented the officers with the Outstanding Service Award during a ceremony held in Missoula. The honor is reserved for state employees who go above and beyond their normal duties while serving the people of Montana.
As part of the recognition, both Verbanac and Vinyard received a letter of recognition from the governor along with a Montana state flag that had been flown over the State Capitol in their honor.
The governor praised their commitment and dedication to public safety, noting that their actions reflect the highest standards of public service.
“Public servants like Emily and Megan represent the very best of Montana,” Gov. Gianforte said. “We are grateful for their dedication and proud to recognize their service to our state.”
Officials say the actions of Verbanac and Vinyard serve as a powerful example of the role public safety officers play in protecting communities across the state, particularly during emergencies that unfold in difficult and unpredictable conditions.
