Montana Transportation Department seeks public feedback on upcoming resurfacing project in southeast Billings

Billings, Montana – The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) is seeking community input on a resurfacing project planned for a section of Montana Highway N-114A in southeast Billings.

The proposed work would cover roughly 1.5 miles of roadway, starting just west of Orchard Lane on State Avenue, continuing through to 1st Avenue South, and ending near the intersection of 27th Street and 1st Avenue South. The effort aims to improve pavement conditions and increase safety for the many drivers who travel this busy corridor.

“The purpose of the project is to extend the life of the existing asphalt surfacing and enhance roadway safety for the traveling public,” MDT stated in their announcement.

Project Details and Timeline

The upcoming work includes a series of major roadway improvements. MDT plans to:

  • Mill the existing pavement

  • Excavate and repair damaged road sections

  • Apply an underseal layer (a chip seal beneath the new asphalt)

  • Overlay with fresh pavement

  • Upgrade pavement markings and install new signage

No property purchases or utility relocations will be necessary for this resurfacing effort, and construction is tentatively scheduled for 2027, depending on design completion and funding availability.

Community Involvement Encouraged

MDT emphasized the importance of community involvement in shaping future roadwork. “Partnering with the community is an important part of properly planning for future projects,” the department noted.

The public is invited to share comments and ideas regarding the resurfacing proposal. Feedback can be submitted online via MDT’s comment form or mailed to:
