Montana DNRC team honored for courageous aircraft recovery effort in Bob Marshall Wilderness

Helena, Montana – Montana Governor Greg Gianforte recently recognized nine employees from the Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation (DNRC) for their extraordinary efforts during a tragic and challenging recovery mission last fall.

The group received the Governor’s Outstanding Service Award for their commitment and teamwork following a deadly aircraft crash that occurred on October 18, 2025, deep within the rugged and isolated Bob Marshall Wilderness. The mission, which involved safely recovering and transporting the remains of three occupants and their dog, required a high level of coordination, resilience, and precision.

“On October 18, 2025, a tragic aircraft incident occurred deep in the Bob Marshall Wilderness – the terrain was remote, the conditions were challenging, and the mission required skill, coordination, and resolve,” said Governor Gianforte.

Ceremony Held in Helena to Recognize Bravery

During a ceremony hosted at the DNRC Aviation Hangar in Helena, Governor Gianforte presented each of the nine honorees with a letter of recognition and a flag flown over the Montana State Capitol in their name. Those honored for their involvement in the recovery included:

These individuals played vital roles, both in the air and on the ground, to ensure the mission was conducted respectfully and safely. Their contributions exemplify the strength and unity of Montana’s emergency and natural resource response teams.

Reflecting on Teamwork and Dedication

Governor Gianforte emphasized that the mission’s success was made possible by “maximizing every available minute of daylight,” with DNRC personnel working in difficult wilderness conditions to carry out their duties with care and determination. “This operation reflects the professionalism, teamwork, and compassion demonstrated by DNRC employees who went above and beyond the call of duty to support their partners and serve Montana,” the governor added.

The Outstanding Service Award, which was established by Gianforte shortly after taking office, is designed to recognize Montana state employees who deliver exceptional public service, whether through acts of leadership, excellence in their field, or through courageous efforts in times of crisis.

Montanans who wish to learn more about the award or nominate an employee for their remarkable service can do so by visiting the official platform.
