Helena, Montana – The Montana Aeronautics Board has approved approximately $3.33 million in airport grant and loan funding for state fiscal year 2027, directing the money toward infrastructure upgrades and safety improvements at 46 public-use airports across Montana. The funding decision was made during the board’s January meeting and reflects continued investment in aviation facilities that serve communities throughout the state.
Montana is home to 126 airports, including 71 that receive federal funding. State grants and loans awarded to these federally supported airports often help leverage additional federal dollars for major construction and rehabilitation projects. Each year, airport sponsors submit proposals seeking assistance for runway preservation, lighting upgrades, safety improvements, and capacity enhancements.
Strong demand drives statewide improvements
For FY 2027, airport sponsors requested $5.1 million in state assistance, demonstrating strong demand for pavement preservation, safety enhancements, and facility upgrades. After review, the board distributed all available grant funding to support both federally funded and non-federally funded airports of various sizes.
Among the largest awards, St. Ignatius received $495,000, Cut Bank was awarded $395,892, and Helena received $235,600. Other notable allocations include West Yellowstone with $231,555, Choteau with $130,245, and Sidney with $137,600. Several airports received combined grant and loan support, including Deer Lodge and Polson, to help complete critical improvements.
Smaller airports also received funding aimed at maintaining safe and reliable operations. Communities such as Anaconda, Circle, Chester, Jordan, Roundup, and Three Forks were among those receiving targeted support for preservation and safety upgrades.
The funding package totals $3,330,004 in grants and $33,304 in loans, supporting projects ranging from pavement repair and lighting upgrades to operational safety improvements. By investing in airports statewide, officials aim to strengthen transportation reliability, support emergency services, and enhance access for business and tourism.
State aviation officials note that improvements to airport infrastructure play a vital role in connecting rural communities, supporting economic activity, and ensuring safe travel. The board’s funding decisions are intended to maintain operational safety while positioning Montana’s aviation system for future growth.
