Augusta, Montana – Drivers traveling in central Montana should prepare for significant changes beginning in early March as bridge replacement work gets underway along a portion of Montana Highway 21. The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT), in partnership with Battle Ridge Builders, LLC, announced that a section of MT 21 between mile markers 0 and 1 will be fully closed starting March 2 and continuing through the end of June 2026, weather and other conditions permitting.
The closure is necessary to allow crews to replace aging structures at Elk Creek, Elk Creek Overflow, and Hogan Slough. Officials say the improvements are critical to maintaining roadway safety and long-term reliability in the area.
Bridge replacement project requires full closures
During construction, full closures will be in place at each bridge location. Drivers will not be able to travel through the work zones or cross the bridges while replacement work is underway. Residents living between the bridge closures will still be able to access MT 21 from one direction, though access from both sides will not be possible at the same time. Emergency Medical Services will also be allowed directional access to ensure response capabilities remain intact.

Motorists will be routed around the closure using Montana Highway 200 and U.S. Highway 287, with traffic directed through Bowman’s Corner. Transportation officials urge drivers to follow posted detour signage and plan for additional travel time.
Following the bridge replacement phase, paving and shoulder improvements are scheduled from late June to early July. During this final phase, MDT expects to maintain two-way traffic while crews complete finishing work.
