Public invited to comment on resurfacing project planned for US Highway 87 in Great Falls

Great Falls, Montana – The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) is inviting the public to review and comment on a new proposal to resurface portions of US Highway 87 (US 87) in Great Falls, aimed at addressing roadway wear and extending pavement life.

Details of the Proposed Project

The resurfacing effort will cover approximately one mile of US 87, spanning across two city streets. On 15th Street, the project will begin at 1st Avenue South and continue north to 5th Alley North. On 14th Street, resurfacing will start at 8th Avenue North and proceed south to 2nd Avenue South.

The proposed construction includes milling the existing road surface, applying a new overlay, and installing upgraded pavement markings and signage. These improvements are designed to extend the roadway’s usability, ensure safer driving conditions, and preserve the overall integrity of the highway.

While this resurfacing project focuses solely on the driving surface and signage, it is worth noting that curb ramps within the project limits will be upgraded separately. This work will be completed through a design-build effort known as UPN 10589000, GF District ADA Upgrades, which is planned before the main resurfacing begins.

Construction Timeline and Public Participation

The project is tentatively scheduled for construction in 2027, pending the completion of the design process and the availability of necessary funding. No new right-of-way acquisitions or utility relocations will be required, helping streamline the process.

MDT emphasizes that community involvement plays a vital role in planning public infrastructure improvements.

Public feedback is strongly encouraged and can be submitted online via mdt.mt.gov/contact/comment-form.aspx or mailed to Montana Department of Transportation, Great Falls Office, PO Box 1359, Great Falls, MT 59403-1359.
All comments should reference project UPN 10547000.

Residents with questions or who wish to provide more detailed input are encouraged to contact Jimmy Combs, Great Falls District Project Development Engineer, at 406-454-5900, or Chris Ward, Project Design Engineer, at 406-454-5894.

For updates on this and other statewide projects, the public can visit MDT’s website and view the five-year Tentative Construction Plan.
