Helena, Montana – Montana has earned national recognition for its strong record of civic involvement, military service, and community participation after being named the second most patriotic state in the country.
Governor Greg Gianforte announced the ranking as the state prepares to celebrate the nation’s 250th anniversary, saying the honor reflects the values demonstrated by people across Montana.
“As we prepare to celebrate America’s 250th birthday, it’s fitting that Montana has been recognized as one of the most patriotic states in the country,” Gov. Gianforte said. “Whether serving in our military, volunteering in our communities, or participating in our elections, Montanans consistently put service before self. That commitment to our neighbors and our nation is what makes Montana exceptional.”
Report highlights civic engagement across Montana
The ranking comes from a recent report released by WalletHub, which placed Montana second nationwide, behind Virginia.
Researchers evaluated all states using 13 different measures related to patriotism. The study considered factors such as military service, the size of each state’s veteran population, voter participation in the 2024 presidential election, volunteer activity, and other forms of civic engagement.
According to the report, Montana performed especially well in several categories.
The state ranked among the nation’s leaders for voter turnout during the 2024 presidential election. Researchers also noted that Montana recorded the highest voter participation in the country’s 2020 primary elections.
Military service also played a major role in the state’s high ranking.
The report found that Montana has approximately 101 veterans for every 1,000 civilians, placing it fifth in the nation for veterans per capita.
Volunteerism was another area where Montana stood out.
WalletHub ranked Montana second nationally for jury service and also reported that the state has the second-highest number of AmeriCorps volunteers in the country.
In addition, more than 37 percent of Montana residents reported volunteering with organizations, making Montana one of only 10 states where volunteer participation exceeds 35 percent.
State officials said the ranking reflects the strong tradition of public service, civic responsibility, and community involvement that continues to shape Montana. As preparations continue for America’s 250th birthday, the recognition highlights the many ways Montanans contribute to their communities, support their neighbors, and participate in the nation’s democratic process.
