National Weather Service warns of snow and blowing winds across Billings region Thursday into Friday

Billings, Montana – A changing weather pattern is expected to bring a mix of rain, snow, and strong winds to parts of Montana, with forecasters warning of possible travel issues and hazardous conditions later this week.

The US National Weather Service office in Billings has outlined a developing system that could impact areas across the region from Thursday into Friday. Early conditions are expected to begin with rain showers on Thursday, but those showers are forecast to shift into snow by Thursday night as temperatures drop.

Snow and strong winds expected to impact region

Forecasters say there is increasing confidence that the heaviest snowfall will occur southeast and east of Billings. As the system strengthens, moderate to heavy snow could develop, creating difficult conditions for both travel and outdoor activities.

In addition to snowfall, strong winds are expected to play a major role in how conditions unfold. Gusty north winds may lead to blowing and drifting snow, reducing visibility and making roads more dangerous. The strongest winds are expected along the Bighorn foothills, where speeds could reach between 35 and 50 miles per hour. Across the broader region, wind gusts are expected to range from 30 to 40 miles per hour.

Officials warn that these combined factors may create wintry impacts, especially for those traveling or taking part in outdoor recreation. Drivers are encouraged to remain cautious and stay updated on changing weather conditions.

Beyond travel concerns, the weather could also affect agriculture. Cool, wet, and windy conditions may pose risks for young livestock, making preparation especially important for those in rural areas.

Authorities urge residents to prepare ahead of time and stay informed through official updates as the system approaches.
