Helena, Montana – Governor Greg Gianforte is urging Montana residents to act quickly as the deadline to apply for two key property tax relief programs— the Property Tax Assistance Program (PTAP) and the Montana Disabled Veterans (MDV) Property Tax Assistance Program — approaches on April 15.
“Property taxes are too high, and homeowners deserve relief,” said Gov. Gianforte. “As we continue to work with the legislature to secure meaningful, permanent property tax relief, I encourage eligible Montanans on fixed incomes to apply for these property tax assistance programs before the April 15 deadline.”
Expanded Eligibility and Direct Relief
The PTAP is designed to assist individuals who meet specific criteria based on income, home ownership, and residency. In 2023, Governor Gianforte partnered with the state legislature to expand this program, increasing the market value cap for eligible properties from $200,000 to $350,000. This change allows more Montanans to access much-needed relief from rising property taxes.
Meanwhile, the MDV program supports Montana veterans who are 100% disabled or the surviving unmarried spouses of such veterans. These individuals can qualify for significant tax reductions that ease the financial burden on households with limited income.
Both programs provide a property tax rate reduction of 30%, 50%, or 80% on the first $350,000 of a home’s market value, depending on income qualifications and other eligibility factors.
Long-Term Commitments to Reduce Property Tax Burden
Gov. Gianforte has prioritized addressing rising property taxes as a core issue. In 2023, he delivered $120 million in permanent property tax relief through House Bill 587. Additionally, the administration secured up to $1,350 in tax rebates for homeowners over 2023 and 2024. Combined, these efforts were designed to more than offset the average property tax increase for Montana homeowners.
The governor also created the Property Tax Task Force to study long-term solutions and control the future growth of property taxes. The task force’s top recommendation for the 2025 legislative session is the Homestead Rate Cut, a proposal that could lower property taxes for homeowners by 15% and small businesses by 18%.
This proposal is expected to bring direct relief to more than 215,000 primary residences and over 32,000 small businesses, while also indirectly benefiting more than 130,000 renters across the state.
