Lame Deer, Montana – The Montana Department of Transportation is seeking public input on a proposed roadway improvement project that would resurface approximately eight miles of Montana Highway 39 north of Lame Deer.
According to transportation officials, the proposed work would begin near Bailey Lane at mile marker 4.2 and continue north to mile marker 12.4 near Lynch Lane. The project is aimed at preserving the condition of the existing roadway and extending its usable lifespan for motorists who travel through the area.
Roadway Preservation Project Proposed
The planned improvements would focus on maintaining and protecting the current pavement rather than expanding the highway.
Proposed construction activities include crack sealing to repair existing pavement damage, leveling work to improve road surface conditions, and the application of a seal and cover treatment, commonly known as a chip seal. The project would also include upgraded pavement markings and the installation of new roadway signs.
Transportation officials said these improvements are intended to help protect the highway from future deterioration while improving visibility and overall driving conditions.
The department noted that construction will not begin immediately. Work will move forward only after design activities have been completed and project funding has been secured.
Officials also emphasized that the proposal will not require any new right-of-way acquisitions or utility relocations, reducing potential impacts on nearby property owners and infrastructure.
Public Encouraged To Share Feedback
The Montana Department of Transportation said community involvement plays an important role in planning transportation projects throughout the state.
As part of the planning process, residents, landowners, and other interested parties are being invited to provide comments, concerns, and suggestions regarding the proposal.
Comments may be submitted online through the department’s public comment system or mailed directly to the Montana Department of Transportation’s Glendive office. Officials asked that participants reference project UPN 10678000 when providing feedback.
The department also encouraged members of the public with questions about the project to contact Glendive District Project Development Engineer Jim Frank or Project Design Engineer Joy Fleming.
Transportation officials said public input helps ensure that future roadway improvements reflect local needs and concerns while supporting long-term transportation goals.
