Montana Department of Transportation announces final construction activities on upgraded U.S. Highway 2 corridor

Harlem, Montana – Drivers traveling along U.S. Highway 2 between Zurich and Harlem will soon see the final stages of a major roadway reconstruction project as crews work to complete the last remaining improvements this month.

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT), working alongside Wickens Construction, announced that final construction activities are now underway on the East of Zurich to Harlem reconstruction project. The work area stretches between the intersection with Eight Mile Road, located about four miles east of Zurich, and the intersection with Thirty Mile Road just west of Harlem.

The project has already brought significant upgrades to the corridor, and transportation officials say the remaining work is focused on protecting the newly improved roadway and preparing it for long-term use.

Final Construction Activities Scheduled

This week, crews are installing rumble strips along the highway. Additional work is scheduled for next week, including seal and cover applications, commonly known as chip seal, as well as fog seal treatments.

Officials noted that all scheduled activities remain dependent on weather conditions and other unforeseen circumstances that could affect construction operations.

During active work periods, motorists should expect traffic control measures throughout the project area. Reduced speed limits will be in place, and drivers are being urged to obey all posted signs and instructions from construction personnel.

Because chip seal operations involve loose gravel, transportation officials are warning motorists to use extra caution both during and immediately after construction. Drivers are encouraged to leave additional space between vehicles, reduce speeds, and remain alert around workers and heavy equipment.

Project Nearing Completion

The East of Zurich to Harlem project has significantly improved a key section of U.S. Highway 2.

Construction widened approximately seven miles of roadway to include 12-foot travel lanes and 8-foot shoulders. In addition, roughly two miles of passing lanes were added in each direction, helping improve traffic flow and safety along the corridor.

While much of the work has already been completed, crews will return near the end of July to perform final striping operations. Officials estimate this work will occur in approximately 45 days.

Once the striping is finished, the reconstruction project will officially be complete.

“We appreciate the public’s patience as crews complete the remaining work on this project,” said Mike Moore, MDT Engineering Project Manager. “The remaining work will finish roadway improvements and help protect its new surface.”

Transportation officials say the completed project will provide safer travel conditions, improved roadway durability, and a smoother driving experience for motorists traveling between Zurich and Harlem.

MDT is encouraging travelers to continue exercising caution while construction remains active and to plan for minor delays until all remaining work is finalized later this summer.
