MDT seeks public input on proposed US Highway 191 reconstruction project south of Four Corners

Four Corners, Montana – The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) is asking residents to share their thoughts on a proposed highway improvement project that would enhance safety and traffic flow along a section of US Highway 191 south of Four Corners.

The proposal focuses on approximately half a mile of roadway, beginning just south of Huffine Lane and continuing to a point near Arctic Spas Bozeman, just beyond 2nd Street. Transportation officials say the project is intended to improve driving conditions while preparing the highway to better handle traffic in the area.

Community members are encouraged to review the proposal and provide comments as planning continues.

Project designed to improve safety and traffic operations

According to MDT, one of the largest parts of the project involves replacing the existing Lower Middle Creek Supply Ditch Structure with a box culvert. Officials explained that this improvement would make it possible to widen the roadway and add a Two Way Left Turn Lane (TWLTL).

By expanding the highway, the roadway through the project area would match the width of the highway both north and south of the construction zone. Transportation officials believe this will create a more consistent driving experience while helping improve traffic movement and reducing potential safety concerns.

Additional improvements are also included in the proposal. Crews would apply a seal and cover, commonly known as a chip seal, to help preserve the roadway surface. The project also calls for upgraded pavement markings, the installation of new road signs, and improvements to existing guardrails.

MDT said the overall goal is to enhance roadway safety features while improving traffic operations for drivers traveling through this busy section of US Highway 191.

Construction is tentatively scheduled for 2028, although officials noted that the timeline will depend on the completion of engineering design work and the availability of project funding.

Before construction begins, the department expects that right-of-way acquisition or temporary construction permits may be needed for portions of the project. Utility relocations could also become necessary as work moves forward.

Transportation officials said MDT staff will contact affected property owners before any survey work takes place. Landowners may also receive additional communication before construction begins if temporary construction permits are required.

The department emphasized that public participation remains an important part of the planning process. Officials said community feedback helps shape future transportation projects and allows local concerns to be considered before work begins.

Residents who wish to comment on the proposal may submit their feedback online through the Montana Department of Transportation’s public comment form or send written comments to the MDT Butte Office, PO Box 3068, Butte, MT 59702-3068. Officials asked that all comments reference project UPN 10273000 to ensure they are connected with the proposed US Highway 191 improvements.
