MDT move forward with expedited repairs to damaged I-90 Bear Canyon Bridge east of Bozeman

Bozeman, Montana – The Montana Department of Transportation has awarded the expedited I-90 Bear Canyon Bridge Repair project to Battle Ridge Builders, launching a rapid response effort to restore a damaged structure east of Bozeman. The repair work will take place in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 90 at Exit 313 and will involve replacing two beams and repairing the bridge deck.

State transportation officials say work is expected to begin in the coming weeks and, weather and other unforeseen conditions permitting, be completed by the end of March. The accelerated schedule reflects the urgency of restoring safe travel conditions along this important corridor.

Detours and Access Changes During Construction

During construction, eastbound traffic will continue to detour using the off- and on-ramps at Exit 313. Motorists should note that Bozeman Trail Road will not be accessible from I-90, and the interstate underpass on Bozeman Trail Road will remain closed until repairs are finished. Travelers are encouraged to check current road conditions and updates at 511mt.net.

“We understand the inconvenience of the detours and are focused on expediting these repairs,” said Geno Liva, MDT Butte District Administrator.

Bridge Strike Prompted Emergency Repairs

The urgent repair project follows an incident in late January when a commercial vehicle attempted to pass beneath the bridge on Bozeman Trail Road while towing a load that exceeded the structure’s clearance height of 13 feet 3 inches. The impact caused significant structural damage, forcing closures and detours to protect motorists.

To accelerate repairs and reduce delays, MDT immediately ordered two 41-foot-4-inch replacement beams, eliminating the long wait times often associated with beam fabrication and delivery. Contractor selection was completed through an exigency procurement process, and required environmental review began within days of the bridge strike.

Officials say the expedited approach is intended to restore normal traffic flow as quickly as possible while maintaining safety and structural integrity.

Transportation officials emphasize that patience and caution in the work zone will help ensure a safe and efficient repair process as crews work to restore this vital section of Interstate 90.
