City of Baker closes section of 6th Street West until further notice for major culvert replacement work

Baker, Montana – The City of Baker has announced a temporary street closure as construction crews work to replace an aging box culvert and improve water flow through a local creek channel.

The closure affects 6th Street West, from Ernestine Avenue to the south entrance of the firehall, located approximately half a block south of Montana Avenue, also known as Highway 12.

According to city officials, the road closure began on Thursday, October 22, 2026, and will remain in effect until further notice.

The Fallon County Road Department is carrying out the project using its own crews and equipment.

Construction work includes excavation and installation of new culvert sections

The project involves several stages of construction, beginning with the excavation of the existing roadway and culvert.

After removing the necessary material, workers will establish a firm base to support the replacement structure.

Crews will then install multiple precast culvert units before rebuilding the road surface above them.

The final surfacing work will depend on weather conditions, which could affect when the street is ready to reopen.

Officials explained that the replacement is intended to improve water flow through the creek channel.

The project will also complete a series of box culvert replacements extending from 1st Street West to the western side of Baker.

Motorists urged to avoid construction area

City officials are asking residents and drivers to stay away from the affected section of 6th Street West while construction continues.

Motorists traveling near the site should remain alert for heavy equipment, construction workers and vehicles moving to and from the work area.

No specific reopening date has been announced.

Residents seeking additional information can contact Fallon County Road Supervisor Bryan Batchelor at 406-778-2019 or the City of Baker Office at 406-778-2692.

For questions outside regular business hours, the city has provided an additional contact number at 406-778-2151.

The street will remain closed until the necessary construction work is completed and the roadway can be reopened.
