Highway 7 reopens after a semi crash south of Wibaux forced a full road closure

Baker, Montana – A serious semi-truck crash forced the closure of Montana Highway 7 (HWY 7) south of Wibaux on Thursday morning, as hazardous winter weather created treacherous road conditions across the region.

According to reports, HWY 7 south of Wibaux was fully blocked approximately 5 miles south of town due to a semi wreck. Emergency responders quickly closed the affected stretch of highway to prevent further accidents and allow for recovery and clearing efforts.

Icy conditions were reported across multiple routes, including Interstate 94 and Highway 7, both of which were experiencing severe black ice. Officials warned drivers to stay alert: “Black ice is extremely bad on I-94 and HWY 7. Use caution when traveling today.”

The semi crash and icy roads disrupted travel along Montana Highway 7, a major corridor in eastern Montana. Spanning over 80 miles, the highway connects the communities of Ekalaka, Baker, and Wibaux, making it a vital route for local residents and commercial traffic alike.

While the highway was later reopened, officials emphasized that roadways “are still wet with icy patches,” urging drivers to continue exercising extreme caution. No injuries have been confirmed at this time, and the cause of the wreck is under investigation.

Drivers are encouraged to check Montana’s road condition updates before traveling and to reduce speed significantly in areas prone to black ice.
